Yep, that´s how I see it too. Yahoo results are totally different from what one can see in Google, but then again the Yahoo engine might change a lot in the days to come.
When I did a search for example term; online blackjack
In the google I had only one top10 result that was not the root domain and the sites were naturally blackjack specific starting from the domain.
In the yahoo I could see 2 sub domain sites in the top10. By the way, both yahoo and google seem to show the same redirect page… hmm… I wonder if I should go there? 
I guess when it comes to gaining reputation, pagerank and stability the big sites rule, but if you wish to target a highly competive term and get that on top fast you should do a targeted site with less, but more in target material.
I am soon launching a set of 30 sites and well I hope I will not be penalised just because they croslink a bit… well that is to be seen.
