No comparison. One big site is better. Making lots of new small sites would be to do the exact opposite of what both Yahoo and Google reccomend, and their opinions are all that what counts. Linking is tremendously important, and linking within a domain is never, ever a problem, while linking between domains can actually get you penalized.
