In checking the specifics of the free sports bet offers, it seems many sites tell the the player to make a bet from their deposited funds and then get a ‘free bet’ credit.
Since there is no type of ‘standards board’ some players may feel duped when responding to free bets that actually require a deposit. At least the verbage of the ‘no deposit bonus’ clearly indicates the expectation.
