The one tip i will share is – Always try and get your link above the fold 
Use them in such a way it gets the visitors to click… I always like to take that approach and use all sorts of call to actions.
I really do not think they are only for seo purposes – i really try and use them for traffic as well – you will be surprised how many clicks you can get from them – especially if your page is really targeted to the link.
