It is my understanding that the term canonical in regards to websites includes anything where there might be more than one URL with the same content. That can include http:// v https:// or www. v non-www as well as any session ID issues.
You can fix any www v non-www issues in Google webmaster tools, but session ID fixes have to be done this way.
