Here is something that I have said a few times now on the radio show and on other blogs. Most of the very successful affiliates have learned the power of leveraging and implemented it successfully across a few verticals.
For instance, like Renne said, the affiliates who are making in excess of $1m are running a network of sites that are usually anchored by one main site (in that particular niche).
Also affiliates who own/have access to a major media channel such as a newspaper, radio show, magazine etc are often in a position to collect a significant amount of traffic and revenues.
