As a Floridian I have been through six hurricanes and while they are unpleasant they arent the end of the world if you make even minimal efforts to negate damages. Here’s what I think about Hurricanes and why I would rather contend with them then other natural disasters.
You have days of warning to react, prepare or get the hell out of harms way.
Let’s face it most areas have one natural disaster or another that can ruin your day.
Most people in the midwest say “I wouldnt want to live in Florida, you guys have hurricanes!” Well, yes we do, but we get forewarning and can batton down the hatches or evacuate. In the midwest you are minding your own business watching TV (or sleeping) when you suddenly hear a freight train like sound and a frigging Tornado rips your house to shreds and deposits your pets in the next county. Not much you can do about it unless you and toto see the damned thing coming and run down to the cellar.
California —- “Hey what’s that shaking?” or “Dude that wall of mud or wild fire totally wasted our house! Gnarly!”
Northwest —- “WTF! The mountain we live on just erupted!” or ” Hey, that 80 foot wave making its way through down town Seattle is washing away all our Starbucks!”
Upper plains — “Gee it’s mighty cold here in the car and the snow isn’t stopping I hope someone comes and gets my ass before it’s frozen stiff”
I would have no reservations about living in the Bahamas. If the weather guys see hurricanes coming pop over to Florida or Atlanta for a few days till the worst blows over then return to paradise…
