Text converts best for me. I use gif banners mostly as decorations, to make things more interesting, like hanging pictures on the wall. Some of these convert also, of course, but text converts best of all for me.
It does depend though on what people are coming to your site for. Look at your keyword and try to give people exactly what they came for.

When you say to look at the keywords, do you mean to parse the HTTP_REFERER (which, by the way, has always bugged me that this variable name was implemented with incorrect spelling, it should be HTTP_REFERRER, but I digress) and then redirect the visitor to an appropriate page based on what they searched for? That’s very clever!!
