I think most will tell you 3 sites targeting one market, but I prefer one site targeting three markets.
If the markets are closely related, that is.
Yes, I trade links for my sub pages, they have good PR and they have even better SERPS. I probably have more traffic entering directly into my subpages than I have through the index page.
