Not being a total techie, one basic ways I am aware of is to make sure you have the height and width specified for each image. That way the space can be allocated and the rest of the page can be loaded. Otherwise you have to wait for the image to load before it can move on to the next part.
Like I said, basic, and not even sure if it is still valid.
