I think you are EXACTLY right on that…HOWEVER, I think that Google (especially) should treat both domains as the same.
I would not accept any theories that they can not do this due to some people using sub-domains and alias’s for a domain name.
However, they would have to be a little careful so as not to hurt sub-domains rankings.
