That is too funny, FictionNet. Totally an honest mistake!
I just remember being so overwhelmed by all of the different programs available…especially when there is a different name for the Affiliate Program and the brands that they represent. It takes awhile to get used to them all and can become very embarrassing and confusing to keep them all straight!
I started with a static html site lol.. also posted on all the ez boards that I had a site, not knowing anything about how any internet/ gambling marketing worked so I got banned from a few.
Back in the mid 1990s discovering Internet porn (groan..) seeing all the ads posted on the sites (really? ads too?), figuring there had to be a shedload of money to be made from spoofing a porn site just to host ads. Then putting up a really pug ugly html site for that purpose and almost immediately getting banned by my ISP…
I have had many embarrassing moments but actually can’t think of any offhand.
However the funniest is my husband who is a partner in the business with me, and he has a terrible habit of mixing up Affiliate Programs or the names of Affiliate Managers – i.e He will think Renee belongs to Star Partner and Silke belongs to Rewards Affiliates.
Anyway the funniest was that years ago we had a meeting with Casino Share / Play Share and at the time the whole Grand Prive debacle was going on and when my hubby and me sat down and started the meeting with him – I noticed that he was being extremely rude to the CEO of Play Share and I couldn’t understand why, and was getting extremely embarrassed.
I eventually suggested we take a smoke break and pulled him aside and asked him why he was being so rude. Of course it turned out that he thought they were from Grand Prive!! When I pointed out his mistake he was very red faced when we went back into the meeting and was as nice as pie to them.
They must have thought he was a lunatic
I made classified ads, and sent them to a bunch of newspapers. None got published, so I called them to ask why and they would not talk to me. I had no idea it required vast amounts of internet work. Then I wasted a good $200 on ppc campaigns that never converted either… then I made friends here. All adds up to I am still a mega noob!
Going to conferences and mixing up people’s real names, forum names and websites. I did that a lot.
One conference I went to, I met more than a dozen guys with shaved heads in one day for the first time. (shaved heads were totally in that year). For the life of me I could not figure out who was who the next day. I even entered a contract with a guy I thought was someone else!
Back when cpays was new, I had a domain name that was ranking #1 in google for the word roulette for over 6 months. As soon as it started ranking, my dodgey cpays affiliate manager telephoned me and told me that he’d like to redesign the site for free because it looked very amateur and would convert much better if it had a professional design. He said he’d offer me 40% rev share. I agreed. A couple of weeks later I received the static html site in a zipped folder, and as per his instructions, I unzipped it and uploaded it as is. The site continued to rank #1 for roulette, but I didn’t see any results. Then one day I decided to check the linking codes and found out that they weren’t even mine. I was sooo angry. The next time that low life called, I let him have it. Suffice to say, we never spoke again and that was the last time that I worked with such a dodgey program.

cpays had quite a bad reputation back then. Probably explains why they ended up changing their name to Affiliates United.
Interesting question! I’ve stopped talking business or gambling full stop after to many beers – it’s great to get to know someone, but if often ends in regret. Business in pre-drinks, then if they want a few more after that I try and change the subject.
I remember when I first started building websites at around 16 I thought I’d come across a goldmine in Google Adsense, building sites and then just clicking on the ads regularly and building up a small fortune. Of course I got banned for life pretty quickly.
Also when getting the RCM business cards I thought I ordered 2000 of them all with the wrong phone number on them. I’d given it to the designer as an example and planned to change it later but totally forgot.
Nothing THAT embarrassing, but I have time left!
I hosted a freeroll for new poker signups during a month at (the former) Pitbull Poker. I also offered a $50 bounty to the person who knocked me out. I got 6 signups, and all 7 of us were seated at the table. When the tournament was supposed to start we instead all got kicked off the table with the pop-up notice that the minimum for the freeroll was 10 players. Very embarrassing, and tough to run credible promotions for a while.
