aaronsmithMemberThat is absolutely amazing I am glad you are alright. I have never heard of an internet forum pull together like that. I am glad your pets are ok!

fintanMemberI’d be interested in writing an article on this story on the Professor’s behalf (we mentioned it in yesterday’s newsletter as the CAP Money winner).
I have to say, as a new CAP staff member, this story really brought home how tight this community is, and how you all go out of the way to help each other. Hats off to all of you who chipped in on this one.

paoloMemberTo put this to perspective – some of us (for example me)
A) Don’t even own a car (have never owned)
Live in <30m^2 apartment (renting it outside from high expense area, not owning)This is not to bash OP, but just as a reminder that if one cuts expenses BEFOREHAND (not having a car etc.) and budget all of their living expenses BEFOREHAND very strictly, keeping in mind what they´ll make (worst case scenario) – one shouldn´t encounter this kind of a situation. It´s all about personal finance planning. There are over 2 billion people out there living with less than $5/day.
EDIT: actually after reconsidering it, I think that number of people living with less than $5/day is much higher than 2 billion.

InactiveAirual, for instance in the US many people cannot work or eat if they have no car.
Without car, on a bicycle for instance it would take me almost a whole day to go to the supermarket and back. And there is no public transport at all. No way to get to work if one has to work outside the home.
In Munich I never did own a car and likely never will. Public transport is wonderful. No point in having a car.
I spent two years of my life not owning a pair of shoes and not wanting them. Couldn’t do that now. But I was living on a beach and just didn’t need any shoes.
Life is different in different places. It’s often very difficult for people to imagine what it’s like to live elsewhere without having lived there themselves. Everything is proportionate to the location. $5 a day here would leave you begging in the streets, homeless and freezing to death.

paoloMemberI understand and I am not living in a third-world country either (actually according to stats I found with fast googling, I live in a country that has higher overall cost to live than USA).
The only thing that bothered me a bit in OP was that it just reads a tiny bit between the lines that:
1) Can´t cut some unnecessary expenses to cut overall expenses (like having pets/animals)
2) For example have to find a “nice place” – I am not in personal financial trouble myself (because of strict personal finance planning) but still I am not even dreaming about a “nice place”. I sleep, work and cook in the same one room.I don´t want to turn this into an argue or anything and I hope the very best for OP. I just hope that OP will think everything through now very closely and start to practice strict personal finance planning and budgeting, keeping books about expenses, cutting off all the unnecessary expenses etc. so that this kind of a situation is less likely to occur in the future.
Good Luck!

Inactive“Nice” is in the eyes of the beholder.
And personally, I’d rather live on the street with my dogs than in a house without them.

InactiveIm sorry.
my husband having a heartattack, then a broken foot, and then having his company close the doors all contributed to our run of bad luck. believe me, i have had it hard my whole life, thrown out when iwas 17 by a mother who was crazy and tried to accuse me of “sleeping with my father”…she was so very sick…had no wheres to live….had nothing, ended up with the wrong man, had two kids, at 22 and became a single parent, lived in my car, worked two jobs with my kids with me, slept in hotels when we could, until i saved enough to find a “nice place”…nice place to me is…one that is not over run with rats or roaches.
finally found a wonderful husband and father for my children and swore i would never let our lives go back to the way it was before. and until now, things were ok. but with the economy being so bad, with a bad president, and losing one thing at a time, you end up with nothing when the unexpected hits…like a heartattack..etc.
i am sorry if i have upset anyone, i feel like an ass now, and i hope everyone does not feel the same about me as A does.

ZmagegwbMemberTriple 777s, I’m new around here but I wanted to say something. Don’t feel bad, you have no reason to. You’ve had some really unfortunate things happen in your life and to your family……it can and does happen to someone here in the US everyday. Many, many decent hardworking people here in the US are living on the edge of disaster, often times through no fault of their own. Don’t let someone else being judgmental about the situation you found yourself in cause you worry or upset you. Hold your head up high…..and hang in there! Sending you a big ole hug!!!!

biggygMemberIn a perfect world we all have money put aside to cover problems like illness ,job losses etc.Sixteen years ago I was one of these people that had my life turned upside down when I was in a serious Car Accident.
It took me 5 weeks in hospital ,another 5-6 months of daily therapy before i could take a cup of coffee and drink it without wasting on myself. My husband and i had 31 months of income loss ,I was pregnant with our daughter at that time so he had to take care of her and me.I also missed the first days and weeks of my daghter’s life.
I sued as I was a passenger and the car i was in was hit side on by Coach bus in the coldest day of february 1992.We went in debt $78,000 for lawyers bills ,we had to sell our house and Buy another one at a time when markets were not great. My parents gave us many thousands as did other family members to keep things going and I am sure there were people who may have thought we had no right living in a house as nice as we had then.
It is very tough when you live one way and have to move to another lifestyle
and it has nothing to do with poor planning.I thank god every day for my parents sticking with us for nearly 4 years of fights and courts .My insurance company offered me $24,000 plus expenses to settle ,my full time employee was argueing with the car insurance who should pay my wage loss benefits so I went without any income for 31 months before my work gave me a lump sum paycheck for the 31 months and my monthly benefits kicked in.It took another two years of struggling before the financial nightmare ended for me and I won my case in court.I wouldn’t take anything of that back now as it has made me a stronger person and it is what drives me today.I hope the help Pat has been give here to get her life sorted out will help her get to a self sufficent level and of course her husband stays well.
As for cars , I use a wheelchair and in last 5 years haven’t found one for under $50,000 that can carry the family and the wheelchair.Sometimes cars are necessary as not all of us can take the bus, walk or ride a bike.
My first apartment was 315sq feet -16×20 with a bathroom ,kitchen and living/bedroom in one.First year i slept on a sofabed then it broke and i slept on the floor for 2 years while I saved money for a house.I think we have all been there ,at least the over 40 group here.Don’t feel bad Pat ,it is called life

InactiveAll I know is I would have been one of them people sitting on the roof top during a flood with my cute little Jack Russell, she is my baby and my kids sibling, I would not give her up for nothing and do what ever it took to keep her with me. Pets are like family to many of us and we would not consider giving up one of our kids to a shelter, I too would do whatever it takes.
Some of us are different and have a natural talent for what we do and some have to work very very hard and still cannot make it in this biz, I do feel that Pat you should look for another line of income, since it is many years later and you have not found your “niche” then you should move on. Please do not get me wrong or think I am discouraging you but I just feel that you should find land work and do webmaster stuff in your free time.
Anyway good luck to your family and the future.

affiliategodMemberI really wasn’t going to go here but….something struck a cord with me. I will not turn this into a debate. A~I do admire your control of your financial situation but, you need to realise some situations are individual exceptions.
Can´t cut some unnecessary expenses to cut overall expenses (like having pets/animals)
I agree with that 110%! They are not just animals to some. People take on the responsibility to care for these “animals” and it is for life. At least it should be. They are living. breathing beings and are as helpless as infants. To discard them is a sin!
I have been in Pat’s situation more times then I would care to mention. At one point, I had 89 cents in my wallet. Was down to 90lbs and starving as I hadn’t eaten in a few days. I went to the grocery to get a package of pasta. I happened to walk up the cat food isle. (Had cats at the time) I proceeded to the pasta. Stopped myself and went back down the cat food isle and bought a can of food for my cats I had at the time instead. Watching them chow down on the food was torture in a way but, I felt good that I did the right thing for them.
Not to mention the fact that I will probably never have children. Not that I really want them so I guess that is ok but, my furkid, chowboy, is my child. I only have a 1/4 of an ovary left as a result of numerous cyst removals leaving me a serious limit on my ability to have a child. Therefore, again, my furkid IS my child and a necessary expense. No one will begrudge me that!
Beside the gambling I do dog rescue. Primarily Chow rescue. It is not easy and sickening at times. The way people treat animals like they are disposable garbage is beyond me. I see no difference in adopting a child or a pet. YOU took on the responsibilty. Responsibility fo life!
Pat,
Not sure if you know and is only my opinion ( as well as the opinion of others) you really do not need to take the dog in every year. I do not get Alexander the yearly shots. I think they are unnecessary. Just chemicals he does not need. By law here, I only need to get him his rabies which there is a vet in town that gives them for free. I order his flee meds and heartworm from a guy (yes, a vet) in CA for like a 1/4 of the price you would pay at your local vet. I been ordering from him for over 14 years now. If you want, I can give you his email addi.

affiliategodMemberPat,
Forgot to mention, IF you ever feel in the position that you cannot care for your dog, it is coming here! I’ll come pick it up if I have to. I’m not that far away. My car runs.lol My Alexander isn’t the greatest with other dogs but he is conditionable and we will adjust.
It upset me greatly when you said you sent him to the pound. I’m sad you didn’t contact me first. I have a fenced in acre in the back. always room for more if necessary.
~hugs on ya and the furkid~

I am unsure how long Pat has been doing this work but my opinion which applies to everyone working online,if you have invested more than 2 years into a web business and can’t pay the bills you definitely should have another job to backup the income.

InactiveThe 777 site is mostly underfunded and had no tech help.
I started G&C as a hobby site too and with a start up capital of $150. When it did start making money, I invested every penny back into it for some time.
I had no idea what I was doing, so every penny I made went to help in publishing my content. I wrote it all myself, and got someone to put it online for me. I went around and looked to see what I would like to see online that other sites DIDN’T have.
Yes, I agree Pat needs to get a job, but 777 is somewhat established and should be allowed to grow, too. It needs decent hosting first of all, and the colors fixed because it can give you a headache, lol. I haven’t dived any further into it, mostly because it does give me a headache.
Most affs do webdesign and hire for writing. I preferred it the other way around. Just because one is no good at one thing or another doesn’t mean one can’t make a go of it, even on a shoestring.
Starting an affiliate site is dabbling in being an entrepreneur. Some people thrive at being an entrepreneur, it makes them come alive and motivates. Others find it scary and insecure and feel overwhelmed. Still others remain with one foot in each camp – employment and owning a business.
Entrepreneurism on a shoestring can be done , but one needs to watch out for some pitfalls. If you find yourself draining every penny from your enterprise and not investing back into it, you are not ready to develop it into a full time comfortable living. You need to have other income, so you can let your new business grow unfettered and roll profits back into the business.
So I do recommend a job for Pat, but I am far from recommending that she give up on 777. The potential remains, the site needs to move to better hosting asap, change colors and take down most banners, and then can be left to age and grow gracefully while Pat concentrates on putting some money back in the family coffers.
