You need a link from a page that is included in google.

Better is to create a google site map and submit it to google.

The shown backlinks when searching for link:http://www.somesite are not correct in google.
Try yahoo and msn to compare.

While I am not trying to contradict Cat, I don’t use Google’s site map thing. The only site I did it for ended up a disaster. Inbound links get you indexed. Inbound links from on topic pages get you indexed better.

I find google sitemap useful for large sites, but not for smaller ones. In any case it’s a bunch of work and if you have certain html mistakes in the site it will fail.

It sounds to me like you are on the right track, if other engines like you google usually follows.

Google has already found you. I would concentrate on adding quality content and google will pay more attention.

It’s not much work to create a google site map.

    Do you know http://www.xml-sitemaps.com ?

You do not need the features priority and change frequency.
The site map is created, uploaded and submitted to google in a couple of minutes.

For mistakes like dead links I am checking with http://www.dead-links.com.

Google doesn’t show all of the backlinks you have. Don’t worry about it.

What matters is whether or not your site is indexed and getting traffic.

Wes is right. You don’t need a Google sitemap for anything; html sitemaps work fine.

Google Webmaster tools complained of an error when I used the v0.9 protocol of xml-sitemaps. I did get it to work by changing 09 to 0.9 in one of the schemas paths in the urlset xml-sitemaps generates.

    xmlns=”http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9″>

    But now I use:
    xhttp://gsitecrawler.com/

its free and you can exclude certain directories and pages in the sitemap. It also generates one for Yahoo.
