Inactiveunknown caller occurs when the phone companies do not exchange caller ID.
This can happen for two reasons :
(1) The companies do not have a commerical arrangement in place.
This happens in New Zealand with our two main mobile operators. You can call each other on different networks of course – but due to a “spat” about the commerical advantages of caller IDs they don’t switch them between networks.
:plain:(2) Phone system incompatiability
Overseas calls to my landline ALWAYS seem to result in the caller ID being exactly “00000” …
sigh.gifWith the US being 100 times more complex – I can imagine that it’s one of thse two scenarios …

Inactive(3) Telemarketers
Personally I never pick up if the number isn’t displayed.
Call your hone carrier and have it blocked., Some new phones will do it for you.

InactiveI wonder if it’s because most telemarkers work overseas these days in low wage economies ?

Inactivewith my service I press *77 to enable Anonymous Call Rejection but it only works for calls within my calling area.
When my id reads a number that I don’t know or out of state I punch the number into http://www.whocalled.us and usually find out that others received the same call.

InactiveI think there’s a way to block the last caller, and if you block the last caller who has an unknown number then it might block all unknown numbers… then again I might be wrong.
I know with my last land line provider I could block up to 10 callers.

InactiveI used to be in the telemarketing business, and we always showed up as an unknown caller, I think it was because our phones were on a t1 system or something. At any rate, you can get put on both your state and national do not call list, and if telemarketing companies don’t adhere to your request, they stand to get fined $10K a pop. Once your on those lists, if you continue to get calls I would play the game and extract as much info as you could, then report them. Telemarketing companies take do not call lists seriously and they will honor your request, it just might take a little time for all of the telemarketing companies to purge their new list. Until then, just pick up the phone and say FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF U. Just like that. BTW, I don’t think you can’t block an unknown number, its like trying to get taken off a junk mail list that has no return address. But technology may have changed quite a bit since I was in the game.

InactiveIt varies by phone provider. I was with telus in Canada after half an hour of searching the phone book i eventually gave up and called the company to ask.
