    OUCH!

I host all my sites/domains ( I have over 100… down from 400 a few years ago) on a dedicated server… all with unique IP’s for $200 with more BW than I could use! lol

Yes virtual or dedicated servers are common now and more importantly they are easy to administer and relatively cheap, BUT five six and seven years ago that wasnt the case.

In the old days a dedicated server was EXPENSIVE and very difficult to admin and when you were creating a few sites here a few sites there they didnt make sense, so what happened is your oldest sites are often hosted individually and you dont follow up on moving them, shit they have been working for years….

    Yikes!

They know they got you on an old contract, I would hope a simple email would reduce those costs dramatically.

For Fatbill and The Professor: Are those dedicated and virtual servers in the US or out? If out can you PM with the URL?

    Thanks!

I pay $104 canadian a month for a dedicated server with 320 gb of space and 7 ips .It is in Canada ,that is extremely cheap and the service is really good.I am a linux geek so dont need a cpanel so u have to add 20 bux if u need one.http://www.iweb8.com is where i bought that one.each additional ip is only $1.00 per month .Then i have a offshore 8 gb for my gambling sites that i pay $62.00 per month ,unlimited websites but u do have the ip costs if you need them.

I’ve been letting domains drop, a dozen or so per week, since december, probably dropped over $1000 a year of domains so far.

Hosting, at one point i had 10 dedicated servers and a few dozen shared hosting places. i’m down to 4, plus 2 that we are about to be shutdown and we let a couple of virtual hosting run out too.

I had so many crappy/unfinished/forgotten sites that when the money was pouring in, wasn’t an issue. Today you realize the $2-$3k a month that you are now saving, is what the average person lives on.

Clean up every few months and try to reduce recurring costs.

    Great post Prof, great advice.

I have been wanting to do a dedicated server for a while now, but I understand you are on your own for the most part when it comes to technical problems which is not good for me. Right now I just do a reseller program, which enables me to have 50 domains for around $50 a month. So that is a great solution for those not quite ready to make a plunge to a dedicated server.

But now I think it would behoove me to get a dedicated server for all my sites. However, am I right when I say I am on my own when it comes to the technical end with updates and everything? Basically, I just want for everything to be the same as it is now, just have all my sites on my own dedicated server with out having to worry about doing any of the technical stuff that I don’t understand. Is this possible? Would you call that a managed dedicated server or perhaps a semi dedicated server. I hate the word technical.

A good dedicated server has good tech backup. A lot of the maintenance is free, some paid. If you have a good xpanel, you should be quite troublefree.

I don’t want to spoil anyone’s ideas, but server administrators make pretty good money, and it’s not because server administration is easy. As far as I know, anyone reading is capable of learning it, but there’s a lot involved.

If anyone is going to go with a self managed sever, make certain that you keep plenty of back ups. Not applying a patch immediately can leave you vulnerable to hacks. Applying patches immediately can make you the guinea pig when the patch goes wrong. When you do discover that a server is hacked… that doesn’t mean it was just hacked and last week’s back up will do. Exploited machines will often sit around for awhile before they are used. On the good side, if your machine gets exploited, the attacker will usually patch up the hole for you so someone else doesn’t come in.

I don’t mean to sound all doom and gloom…. but if you control your own machine and you see how many scripts hit it and how many people poke at it in various ways, you’ll know what I mean. Of course, it’s up to you to install the firewalls and software that will tell you you’re being poked at.

OTOH, paying somone else to manage… they might not do much better. There’s a lot of people out there hosting that have no idea what they are doing. The best thing would be to go managed-dedicated with a very trustworthy place. Even then, nothing is hackproof. One good thing about that is that you’ll be the only one with access at all, as opposed to shared servers where a ton of people already have their foot in the door.

Could the people who posted in this thread about having x number if sites please post how many visits and page views they get daily.

And if people could give recommendations for dedicated or virtual hosts that they have experience with.

    thanks

I have had a dedicated server since 1999. Its fully managed, totally dependable, and runs me $200 a month!
