I used to have a lot of issues with security about a year ago for one of my client’s servers, most of the problems were related to his programer’s bad coding. There can also be problems at the operating system level and from my experience I have noticed that BSD is the most secure.

I had lot’s of security problems last year. It was our system administrator, one of my first employees, someone who worked for us for 7 years and was our most trusted employee. Basically trying to make work for himself, then when we brought in outside help, he just kept staging breaches and trying to leave clues to point to competitor sites.

Dean, i may be contacting you for that name. Just another thought, the hosting people were messing with you to get more $$$ out of you for fixing one problem, then causing a new one. That’s how our guy worked.

It was mostly the way the server was initially set up by an under qualified tech who quit then the leasing company guys of my dedicated server took over and I think it was more incompetence than anything.

Anyone who has seen their server go down will know what I felt…your whole business just disappeared! :(

Now everything is done “properly” the nightmare won’t happen again and I am up for just a few hours maintenance/update fees a month. Tony (my IT mate) offered me a bunch of solutions and options, explained them well to me (I don’t understand much backend stuff) and detailed thoroughly everything undertaken which was really impressive. We have become pretty good mates, as well as sharing a love of Delicas I have learn’t a lot of stuff and can’t recommend him highly enough. I know he undercharged me for a lot of stuff. ;)

Please tell me what do I need that to prevent my site from hackers?
It depends on my hosting provider or on me?

What should I install to feel safely? :unhappy:

If you are just hosted with a hosting provider you will be fine, they take care of security issues, my direction is I have a dedicated server and am responsible for my own operating system/ software installation and updates. I employed people in the past that were f**kwits. :)

A dedicated server is only necessary when:
    1. You have a lot of sites and it becomes economically unviable to pay $20+$20 etc per site, per month on a shared hosting service. It becomes cheaper to have your own server.
    2. High traffic. On a shared service your bandwidth and site speed is determined by the amount of users also using the service.

There are probably a shitload of other reasons but my brain is fried from 12 hours of copy pasting old stuff into new. :)

thanks guys. I have a business plan, my hosting provider is very good, so if they take care about my security I may calm down.

Sounds to me like you have a co-located server, not just a hosted dedicated server. I have had a dedicated server with my hosting company for 6 years now… they provide all the security and deal with those issues for me… thank god! :1circling
