InactiveInteresting….
First of all, these are rumors, and we all know how rumors get circulated, distorted, etc. We should take these rumors with a grain of salt, but it surely does make for interesting reading.
That said, assuming that these rumors have any merit, can bills be modified like that and still signed by the President, or does it need to get thrown back at Congress for approval ? I’m no expert on how Congress works, and besides, have lost all faith in the system anyway.
Bush will obviously sign the Ports Bill, and you can bet that he is being pushed very hard by his GOP friends (Frist, Goodlatte, Kyl, Leach, etc.) to sign the Gambling Bill, as it will be a vote-getter, in what is turning out to be a very precarious election for the GOP. They will need every vote they can get to retain the majority of each House of Congressat this point. Foley certainly didn’t help their cause of late. Hence, Bush will be very quick to sign this bill, even if there are changes, and it is legal for him to enact the bill with those changes.

InactiveI have a question thats been bugging me for days now.
WHy is Bush waiting till the last possible day to sign this bill? Friday is Day 10, where if not signed it would be sent back to stand on its own in congress, which would be great!….So why is he deliberatly waiting till the last day to sign a bill that everyone seems to believe will be most definitely signed, i mean he signed a couple of bills last week, he could of signed it then if it is such a shoe in?? why wait???

My guess would be one of the following:1) He’s busy, and that was the earliest he could do it;
2) More than likely – he’s waiting as long as possible, so that the
signing will be as close to elections as possible. This bill (Ports
and gambling) are vote-getters, not vote-losers. He wants his
contituency to have recollection of these signings, when they go
to the polls;3) The only other possible reason (and I know that it’s the reason that
we would all want), is that there are some issues with the bill, as it
currently stands. Doubtful, but who the hell knows ???October 10, 2006 at 9:24 pm #711070Anonymous
InactiveI personally have a strange feeling that he is not going to sign it. Why not? They know how many people want to be able to gamble. By not signing it might get those people (online gamblers) to vote for republicans. Not signing in their opinion may offset to some extent Iraq and Foley.
Yes I know wishful thinking. :woo-hoo:

Seriously, it’s the Christian coalition that have been this party’s voting constituency during this administration. I seriously doubt he would risk pissing them off. Besides, line item veto is not law yet again ?October 10, 2006 at 11:15 pm #711090Anonymous
InactiveHere is a follow-up corrolary to Cowboys’ 1st post in this thread, that may substantiate axl’s gut feeling. It may be all speculation here, but maybe there is room for a miracle:

InactiveOne thing is for sure, there is no law yet, just a bill to be signed. So, 888, partygaming and others saying that don’t accept gambling anymore from the US are being ridiculous. A correct approach would be to wait until it’s law. There is still no law right now. So, if it happens the bill is not signed, it means that everything will stay the same.
What will 888, partygaming and the likes do?
Sorry pals, bar is open again, it was a mistake.
It would be ridiculous and laughable.
Just carrying my pockets with some gambling shares. Just in case. Anyway they are so low that takeovers will arise if anything goes wrong.

InactiveThis is a must pass bill which will definitely be signed… however, since Bush has the authority to remove add-on bills from it. I think that he’s waiting for the very last day to sign it, in order to get a general feel of what the majority of voters think of this bill before he decides on what to do. Only a complete and utter moron would sign a bill that will anger millions of voters, just to please a few thousand self-righteous ones.
