InactiveThe US does what it wants and has made it quite clear, that it doesn’t give a crap about the WTO and its decision-making. Bush and his cronies feel that they are above the law, and in times of crisis (i.e., terror), they can do whatever it damn pleases.
Don’t expect anything to come out of this, unless the US needs something from the WTO.

InactiveThats where the WTO holds the trump card. The US has filed a suit against China for unfair trade practices. There is a WTO meeting in December about Antiqua vs US internet gambling, US did not comply with WTO ruling and they are going to hold up any WTO decision on China.

InactiveTitus,
Yes, I heard about this on another thread. You will see the US reaction to all this when Bush signs the bill. There is no way that he’s going to Pocket Veto the Ports Bill on account of the gambling bill being attached. That would be political suicide. As far as Line Item Veto is concerned, the Senate still needs to approve a recent bill permitting it; hence, that is not an option either.
The bill will be signed. Although it may be challenged legally on multiple fronts, the damage will have been done when it is enacted. Actually, the damage has already been done.

Of course there will be Greek. Many Americans don’t even know that this legislation was passed. The problem is I would have been a lot more hopeful if the challenges and the lobbying happened BEFORE the bill was passed. Once it becomes law, it could take years, if at all, to unwind it. By that time, our businesses are long gone. There is no way that any of the Poker and Casino companies that have already pulled out (and there are quite a few) will jump back in, unless the law gets repealed legally first.October 6, 2006 at 5:19 pm #710369Anonymous

Those billion dollar companies should have done a better job protecting their investments long ago. They all but crawled up into the fetal position for Uncle Sam and their laying down is going to leave a lasting impact.

Believe me Bush’s “Political Suicide” was sealed long before Congress Passed this Bill.
