Spend some time going through this forum, you will get a lot of ideas of what people are and are not doing. The short answer is build content and backlinks for you site, avoid most PPCs (though some people are doing them) and avoid all offers to sell you 1 million hits for a nickle (those are all scams).
SEO is a big word for a big world. if you don’t know what to do, and more importantly, what NOT to do, try to read in SEO forums before attempting something that’s not common knowledge (like links).
it’s hard work, but usually it pays off.
