InactiveI dont have any exclusive information or anything. I do know that the number to be killed was raised from 320 000 last year to 325 000 this year.
My opinion is available at this website that I designed: http://www.canadiansealhunt.com (hoping to seo it for the keyword Canada)
It is pretty barbaric, since like you said there is no environmental reason behind this. I was sort of hoping that this would stop once the convervatives came into power but of course that was wishful thinking.
Yes the killing of whitecoats is now illegal… but all that means is that they have to wait until the animal is of 3 weeks of age before killing it.

InactiveI agree one of Canada’s darker sides. In the meantime our polar bear population are having a tuff time finding food. I wish Green peace was a little more active these days.
Send a ice breaker up there and cause some havoc. greek39

InactiveGreenpeace is not as active as they used to be, they are more of a fund raising organization now. One thing is for sure they do know how to make the news. I also have a lot of respect for members there, but I think some of the problems are with the senior members who have grown a little too soft.
For a real movement that gets things done visit http://www.seashepherd.org they are simply amazing.
Hopefully things turn around for the polar bears.

But, even if they were only killing adults, those adults are the mothers – they come to the area to give birth.
I’m going to write letters to the addresses posted on Antoine’s site, Canada Seal Hunt .
Greek, what’s happening with the polar bears? Harsh winter?

InactiveI just wrote the emails and sent them. One to the Prime Minister, one to The Hon. Geoff Regan.
Here is a poignant article on the hunt: http://www.etaiwannews.com/showPage.php?setupFile=showcontent.xml&menu_item_id=10&did=d_1142818972_28239_94502F96086FCF73C43F6EC0FA2CDDF4A56A92FB_26&area=taiwan&area_code=WW000
(hope the link isn’t too long to work).I tried to view a video on the hunt, but just couldn’t stand to watch it.
You know, after they banned the killing of baby seals, which I now realize only pertains to the very young, I had forgotten about the whole thing. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Antoine.
We have to make this stop.

vladcizsolMemberWhy DO they kill the seals?
March 23, 2006 at 2:40 pm #686892Anonymous
InactiveFor their fur. Although you’d think that market would be drying up due to boycotts.

vladcizsolMemberThat’s insane. In Florida its a little warm for seal fur, but I would have thought people would not purchase seal skin products based on the press these hunts received in the past.
This practice should be outlawed. There is no good reason for people to harvest skins from seals. This sort of barbarism is unacceptable.
While I don’t have a problem with regulated hunting for food or even population control in species that might face starvation due to their sheer numbers. I do NOT believe in killing animals for pure sport or vanity.

InactiveThe topic aired on CBC last night. The said the quota for this year is 325,000 to be killed out of 5 million. The manner the pups are killed is ugly, they are clubed and skinned right there on the spot. The mother seal hangs around the pup for days.
It taking place in Northern eastern Canada and is part of a cultural tradition. The skins are sold, providing income th the local economy. Why not just shoot them?
Anyway, its dispicable. greek39

InactiveIt is insane. Fur coats, accesories and trinkets.
http://www.harpseals.org/hunt/pelts.htmlAND it isn’t even economically viable for Canada – the industry is subsidized by the government.
Quote:The current wholesale price of seal skins provides greater incentives to the sealers; but without government subsidies, including the work of the Coast Guard in carving paths through the ice for the sealing boats, the commercial seal “hunt” would not survive. The more I learn about this, the more outraged I get!

InactiveI would like the pratice to stop, there is no real need for it. The killing of seal pups is not instant. The sealer has to wack the pup in the head several times. Why not shoot them instead, a lttle bit more humane? greek39
March 23, 2006 at 3:19 pm #686903Anonymous
InactiveMaybe the sealers are the ones who should be clubed and skinned.

InactiveMyth #9: The majority of Canadians are opposed to the seal hunt.
Reality: Animal rights groups currently campaigning against the seal hunt cite a 2004 Ipsos‑Reid poll stating that the majority of Canadians are opposed to the hunt. In fact, Canadians support federal policies regarding the seal hunt. An Ipsos-Reid survey conducted in February 2005 concluded that 60% of Canadians are in favour of a responsible hunt.I think they only did this survey in Eastern Canada. Do it in Ontario and you’ll get a 95% against.
