InactiveI dont know how to play poker at all, but earlier today I went on Empire Poker and picked a random game to test out the software. Since I didn’t know what I was doing i kept clicking on raise or bet when my turn came.
I won 5 times in a row! I think that’s what they call beginner’s luck….

InactiveWe try to get together on Wednesday nights to play poker at Party Poker at a private table. Sometimes Mongoose sets it up; sometimes I do. I went out and drank copious quantities of ice cold beer last night. If anyone’s available, perhaps we could play tonight? If not, then maybe next Wednesday.

I played last night anyway… did ok for a while. Went in with $50 and won up to $123 before the Party Poker Plant came into the room.
Get this: I’m dealt pocket rockets… And I simply call the first round. Sitting behind me, the Party Poker Plant raises before the flop… I’m thinkin’ “fine with me”….
The flop is something like “9 4 T” and she starts raising like mad. I figure she has poket cowboys or whores… I’m not too worried becasue most people wouldn’t raise pre-flop on pocket 10s when everyone was calling anyway.
So, 4th street is a ten, so we have “9 4 T T”, and she’s still betting like crazy. The river is another ten, for “9 4 T T T”.
She’s going crazy… like a $45 pot now. I am worried about the 10’s, but by this point there’s just 3 of us left. I remember she bet pre-flop… and that the other schmo has just been matching the bets.
WELL, CAN ANYONE GUESS WHAT SHE WAS HOLDING? A high pair? An A K even? Nope…
Her hole cards where: 7 T
What d’ya think o’ that?

GuestGeeez, who even plays with hole cards like that, never mind raise pre-flop!
I bet you were tee’d off, eh?
What’s this about a plant, anyway?

InactiveA “plant” is someone who (I believe) works for the poker room and comes is to raise the bets and/or generate some extra income for the site.

i gotta ask, 7 T suited? In all honesty, I was so shocked and pissed off I do not recall.
I am a fairly aggressive player, and I wouldn’t even raise pre-flop on a suited 7 T ! If I feel lucky, I may call to see the flop… but unless it was a bluff technique, it just makes no sense.
There were 10 people at the table, and about 4 or 5 called in front of her on the button. The blinds stayed in as well after she raised. Maybe she tried to scare some of the 6 or so players who stayed in and decided she was too far invested not to play the pair of 10’s after the flop… who knows…

InactiveWith 40,000 plus active players I don’t think PP has any need for plants and they get enough silly players who just raise and raise on nothing that they do not need them.
Most new players tend to get a little excited and do some silly betting, eventually you will get their money as playing smart really does pay off in onine poker.

Inactiveyou wouldn’t raise pre-flop with 7-T suited because you’re not a crappy poker player. that can’t be said for everyone.

but once that flop hit, i can see her betting that way without a problem. she landed top pair. it may not be the best, but it might be the best hand she can see (from reading the board).
so, she bet it. and when the turn comes and she lands top set, why back off?
at any rate, it sucks getting aces cracked, and when the play come totally out of left field like that it is infuriating.
oh, the suited thing, some people honestly play every hand they get suited hole cards. not a good way to win over the long run, but they do it anyway.

InactiveWell, Islandman, this particular “lady” had a lot of really lucky breaks that night. And any player who knows anything about poker knows that bluffing on a 1/2 table with 6 players who are already calling isn’t going to have the desired affect.
Maybe she was just so dumb she won? 😎

GuestSeems that whenever I get pocket aces someone else gets pockets K’s or Q’s or J’s (so, of course when I bet, they call) and they get a third on the flop, and I never get another ace…..
bah pocket aces are overrated

the flop: x-9-T
the turn: J
