Why did they not stay the course and fight for their rights?

Same reason Ebay backed down with Paypal …

they are betting that the odds are against them.

Anybody have any thoughts on what’s next in their successfull

    game plan ?

The biggest players in their respective markets are betting

against beating Big Brother and they can

afford to loose money … it doesn’t look good for

    American Gambling.

    Hey aleph,
I would not be surprize if the US Gov. started contacting US owned gambling portal owners to put presure on us to shut down our web sites in the near future. It would stand to reason that this could posibly be the next move. Who know’s right now what is going to happen?

Let’s hope they don’t start censoring which websites appear

    on the search results.

Yes, that is a big concern that few of us have discussed on the phone recently. I hope that does not happen either.

That would be one of the biggest attacks on free speech anyone has tried in the US, and (pardon my optimism) probably will never happen. I don’t even think this government would try that one. It sure wouldn’t last long if they did. These guys, http://www.eff.org/mission.php , would be all over that.
And just for the sake of stirring up conversation, although it would hurt badly in the short term, do you think that might help us in the long run?

I hope I am not putting words in Jeff’s mouth … I think he may

be referring to the backlash that would be caused if they

did censor the search results and that it the long run it would

    backfire.

I was thinking that it may make bring attention to how ridiculous this crusade against online gambling is. Especially if they did something as repressive as censoring the web.

Well, it isn’t very practical to chase down every small portal owner and try to close them down without any law to back it.

That would likely result in a class action suit – the communal loss of revenue would be staggering and such a suit will make the politicians think twice.

Given a class action suit by affiliates, some of the other injured businesses may join at that time. Or quietly help finance it.

My bet is that the DOJ will continue to try to close down major advertising vehicles and try to put us out of business that way.

    The “trickle down effect”.

They are not able to pass a law through congress, and they are now counting on fear to achieve their goals.

The current actions are really not very surprising or earth shaking – we saw the beginning of this crusade with the control over credit cards (the government telling its people how they can or cannot spend their own hard earned money!)

Then came paypal and now the PPCs.

It is too bad for American citizens, as this very large volume business will undoubtedly move to another country. Regulated and taxed, it would bring in lots of revenue.

I don’t quite think that free listings will disappear for us – but I think they will be blockable by the user like porn.

Alcohol, gambling and prostitution – you can’t prohibit them and should regulate them. It is the only rational thing to do.

Hi Allan or should I say Captain :)

I think the answer to your question lies in foreign companyes and allianses with us non-US gambling webmasters.
Heck! – how could the US coverment know where or why you are getting paid? I think if you setup a offshore company or make a deal with a offshore operator you can rest assured that the US coverment cant step in. Of course the trust issue rises here; can you trust offshore banking, accountants or the people you are dealing with, but I think that with proper gameplan it should be arrangeble.

Just my 2 cents worth – Best regards, Mika
