InactiveYou may want to try running the internet explorer repair.
I know you said this was an explorer problem…
You may also want to see that active desktop is turned off and see if that helps.
(right click on the desktop – not on any icons – see that show web content on desktop is unchecked)I’ll check back here in a few mins and if your on we can discuss in a messenger service to look and see if there are any recognizable bad things in your startup before you reboot….

InactiveBernie….
This sounds similar to the start of my pc woes. I found no virus or descriptions of this… but from the desktop refreshing it degraded to windows rebooting with various error messages on windows startup, toolbars and desktop icons disappearing, to finally the pc refusing to boot at all! Basically got to loading windows with a brief blue screen and would boot itself over and over.
I am on my pc now (waiting for a new one) had to reinstall xp 5 times and 4 formats but things are not right at all.
Trying to install software and some gives corrupt messages…
Windows still crashes and explorer is still playing up.
I haven’t found any hardware conflicts and it is a bit of a mystery…anyone else heard of similar?

InactiveWe just found out that another person has had this happen recently. Not been able to find out if this is a virus or a big coincidence.

InactiveI thought it was just me and my pc (deaning here) but this is becoming widespread, if you are experiencing frequent explorer crashes (as opposed to IEexplorer) please read and post any info you can. This appears extremely malicious and defeats drive formats and reinstalls of the operating system if a virus.

InactiveIf it is windows files corrupted, I recommend trying Internet Explorer repair.
I understand the errors appear to be coming from (windows) Explorer and not IE, however many many .dll’s are shared between the applications.
I would also recommend reinstalling or upgrading directx.
This kind of problem can also be tied in to the swap file becoming corrupt or memory starting to go bad, or the hard drive could be developing a bad sector in the system file area. A full scan disk can’t hurt, although can be very time consuming.
This could also be an application or virus loading at startup, which could be hidden in a run key in the registry, or a dll that is loading from the system folder.
If you have a tech or friend that could loan you/install a hard drive temporarily, I would unplug your c drive and do a fresh install of windows and run it a few hours….if the problem continues it’s hardware related….if that clears the problem it’s windows related.

GuestReboot. It’s the first step always.
What program were you running at the time?
It could be an outdated or corrupt driver – It is a good idea to reinstall directx as mentioned earlier.Try this windows support site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q267/8/58.ASP&NoWebContent=1
It’s about “memory could not be read”, I’m not sure that it’ll fit your problem, but it’s worth a shot.Doncha just love computers?

InactiveHi,
After two days of misery, Im back.
This is what I did to fix the mess:
I reinstalled the OS on my slave drive (assuming you have two HDs) Since I use 2000 it allows me to run multiple OSs on my machine. I don’t know if this is an option with XP. (it should be)
When rebooting with two OSs installed on your machine, you just pick off a small DOS driven menu which OS to run.
If I choose the old one, I can boot up, and everything is still screwed to shit.
If I choose the new one, I have never seen a faster computer… this virus (for me) was a blessing in disguise. It’s still a Pentium 4 under all my crap….
So don’t format…. just reinstall OS (on a totally separate drive) .. for instance I now boot of drive “
” instead of “C:”No software loss and my computer is running faster than ever.
I can still login to the other OS and the computer is still “wigging” out.
I just select the new OS I installed at boot
For the software… I would login to the old, completly fucked up OS (I know this was the hardest part to do)… keep the damn thing busy while it was trying to shut down and boot up on me… one way to do this is to run an application as fast as possible. (As soon as you see an icon, double click on it, if you can make it load before the explorer crashes, it will stay in memory (and all the BS will be flashing in the background) — it’s wierd as hell — but then you can just sit in the program waiting for the next reboot…. get real good at the keyboard shortcut to go to the control panel…. then get in add – remove… remove as many as possible…. reboot …. load new “fresh” OS….. delete the scraps… reinstall all software you couldn’t save.
I didn’t lose anything I cant replace.. thank god.
B
if anyone in still needs help PM me, I’ll do my best.
– apologies for the writing job, im tired!December 9, 2003 at 4:40 pm #642507Anonymous

This IS the error message I was getting…. I have an HP officejet d135….
I hope my computer doesn’t get whacky again.
