I think PR still matters, but Google is still re-shuffling its index.

Realize that two things have been occuring lately: 1) the big algo change (or whatever it was) and 2) the usual deep crawling and updating of sites.

If PR increases I think it can only be a good thing… However, I do know of a few exceptions to this…

    Keyword: Online Casinos (Google)

You will notice that http://www.888-online-casinos.com is currently ranked #1 with PR 5

But, prior to the algo change, http://www.777-best-online-casinos.com was tops, with PR 7.

http://www.777-best-online-casinos.com still has a PR 7, yet it is ranked in the 10th spot.

Professor, which sites specifically increased in PR and which decreased? And most importantly, where do they fall in the SERPs?

In the past i’ve ignored free search engine results finding them too inconsistent and time consuming to bother with. In the last 6 months i figured the only way to expand business was to get into SEO. If pr matters it really doesn’t show.

http://www.casinoranking.com has a pr of 7. It was listed in the top 20 under several competitive terms and now it is no where to be found. The affiliate programs industry is far less competitve and i have a pr6 website, yet it is no where to be found if looked under affiliate programs. On a good note i do have several number 1 rankings for uncompetitive terms. But my number 1 websites are too new to have PR! I’m constantly listed lower than sites with mediocre PRs for my old websites…

I for one am starting to look forward to 2004 when google wont dominate the landscape. I was happy to see yahoo drop the yahoo directory (in the search results at least) since the results were just crap. But if yahoo gets a real search engine this might be a good thing. Google needs a good kick in the ass….

    Quote from your link Dominique:

If you look closely at the Google search engine results pages now you will see that the Google AdWords boxes have grown a bit. Signs of things to come? Does Google want commercial search listings to only appear in ads? Now that Google has so many websites dependant upon it, they can change the face of the internet overnight, and people have to play by Google’s rules. So as the IPO is nearing, Google may be looking for some cash to show solid results which will improve opening stock price.

I think google might be getting what it deserves pretty soon. I’ve had 2 non internet related acquaintances that have mentionned how they prefer msn search over google as of late.

follow the advice of a webmaster world poster and search for “tourists attractions in New York”, which returns a site about Romania as the first result.

    – things like this, and the fact that i still see things shuffling make me believe more firmly that this is not the new way. the spring was the same painful phenomenon, but that straightened itself out.
i think it’s too early to start reading things into the current rankings, and certainly too early to start drastically new seo methods. just my opinion.

I agree with you Mongoose. Today Google finally updated PR and is updating back links displayed in the tool bar, so this thing is still in progress for sure.

    El Panico De Googlio.

In this period of mayhem and panic I talked to the Prophet that rules the above and beyond SE mayhem and he told me this:

“Deaning, you ask question after question and you bore me. Your next question shall decide your fate once and forever more. Think carefully now.”

“Ummm… prophet who will win the rugby world cup?”

“Are you stupid? That was determined a couple of days ago you idiot!”

“Well, I didn’t watch it, did you?

    “Yes.”

“So great Prophet WTF are you doing sitting watching sport while the great GOD of SE is going to crap delivering WRONG results to us mere mortals?”

    “Are you there?”

    Bastard hung up on me.:(

Regretfully, I think this is it ladies & gents :(

Google has decided that they longer wish provide affiiate type sites with free traffic. The few remaining sites are most likely utilizing some sneaky technique that will make them stick out ilke a sore thumb since the new filter(s) didnt catch them. These sites will most likely now be easier to remove manually.

Furthermore Googles going to the Market soon and Im sure they want to increase their worth by bringing in a strong 4th quarter earning(s) – what better way than to drop the competition and make them purchase adwords/adsense.

Also you will notice lots of sites like AMAZON dominating the SERPs – I imagine they have something invested in this sneaky little venture. (Maybe a huge buy of stock, or some money under the table.) Maybe they just want to help boost the economy when the news starts reporting how much internet profits increased in the last quarter.

Who knows? All I know is that my sites are no longer showing for any of my keyword(s) and phrases. Search for “Play Video Poker Online” and you get Amazon books … HOW the hell is that relavant?

Be nice to think this is going to blow over, but it doesnt seem realistic at this point. They think they are the ONE – the powerful ones that can do no wrong.

The way I see it we (public) made them what they are by telling all our friends and famiily how great they are – we can now start telling everyone they suck and the word will spread just as quickly!

Been sorta stressed about it, but Im too damn tired to rant and rave right now – finally returned back to FT work! heh!

Guys I think its going to straigthen out soon. Google is still working on this and it’s a major dance. Imagine the computing power and time it has to take to categorize, cross reference and locate back links for probably over 1 billion pages!! Its got to be a staggering task and its amazing they dont have more trouble then they do. I cant believe free pages from geocities and lycos are what they want to display to their searchers.

I hope they get this sorted out soon though as it is very stressful to watch this shit basically wipe out millions of dollars in sales each day….

I agree with the Professor 100% on this issue. The points he has made above are right on the money. This is a major dance that has not completed yet. PR and back links are updating as of today. In the next few days we should see better results again at Google. In my opinion Google would not want to see the present search results permanately. Keep the faith and you will see that all is well in a few days or so.

While it’s difficult not to get discouraged i also believe that the update is not complete. It’s almost as if half the websites out there are missing. Regardless i am not enthiusiastic about any near term positive changes.

I had no idea you were at the million mark a day! :3eyes:

I will say this. I feel that Google picked a very bad time of year to do this as it is the holiday season and will damge sales for many webmasters. Let’s all hope that this dance ends by the weekend.
