Unibet Awarded Gaming License For Belgium
Nordic owned Unibet has become the sixth legal operator allowed to operate in Belgium with an official license from the Belgian Gaming Authority. It wasn’t easy, as Belgium has made it difficult for operators to get the license since starting to issue them at the beginning of 2012.
The government has strict guidelines including that online operators must be connected to “brick and mortar” casinos which are physically located in the country. That’s why Unibet recently formed a strategic alliance with the UK-based Rank Group, which owns the Grosvenor Casinos in order to satisfy the Belgian requirements, as they have two land based casinos in Belgium.
One of Europe’s largest gaming operators, Unibet will now be growing their popular brand in legalized markets including France, where it operates a poker room. The market they choose not to enter was the Spain at this time.
That won’t slow them down, as Unibet is also one of the largest brands on the Microgaming poker network; and now entry into Belgium will surely grow the player base. The good news being that Belgium does not require operators to segregate local players from international pools.
