Pennsylvania sports betting revenue exploded in September

Pennsylvania’s budding regulated sports industry saw revenue boom in September as American football hit its full stride. That boost from football carried over into all sides of the industry as Keystone State gambling operators saw increases in action pretty much across the board. In many ways, this is exactly what the gaming industry was hoping would happen when the Supreme Court broke down the walls preventing states from offering their citizens the opportunity to legally wager on sporting events.
All told, Pennsylvania gaming operators took in $194.5 million in wagers during the month of September and that represents a new record for Keystone State regulated sports betting. While the number is impressive, it’s also worth noting that this is the first year that Pennsylvania residents have been able to wager legally on sports. But that $194.5 million is nearly double what they took in for August.
The reason for the boost is almost completely the result of the onset of American football, which is one of the big red flags for sports betting in American. While other sports, especially the NBA, are popular with American players nothing is even remotely comparable to football.
The big winner among Pennsylvania’s regulated gaming operators was FanDuel. Their branded sportsbook took in a massive $89 million handle. That number generated about $5 million in revenue and most of that action was handled on the company’s mobile app.
The takeaway from Pennsylvania’s big month is that Americans are keen on sports, but that football season is when most of the action is going to take place. And most of that action is going to be done on mobile apps.
