Could Hellmuth's New Poker Column Assist Anti-UIGEA Movement?

April 6, 2009 (CAP Newswire) — Although the content of the new feature probably will deal much more with traditional poker than the online variety, there's still promise in the fact that one of New Jersey's biggest news sources has just kicked off a new column written by poker pro Phil Hellmuth Jr.

The new column is featured in mycentraljersey.com, which is the website for the Garden State's newspapers Home New Tribune and Courier News. The first entry appeared yesterday, a simple article entitled “New poker columnist Phil Hellmuth Jr. says hello”. In it, Hellmuth introduces himself to the readers and gives a quick overview of his background and personal life.

Hellmuth’s fame comes from his many appearances in televised poker tournaments, so it’s not likely that his column is going to spend much time covering Internet poker, or addressing the legal situation surrounding that game.

However, the fact that this well-known poker player is speaking from a position of authority to greater New Jersey may well benefit that state’s recent drive to legalize sports betting and other forms of gambling — which itself is tied closely to the new political movement to overturn UIGEA.
