How do I search to see if my website has a penalty from google or other SE?

Most I can help with is finding out if your site is banned by Google. Use this tool to find out:
    http://123promotion.co.uk/tools/googlebanned.php

You might also want to check your link partners to make sure none of them are banned, that will get you a penalty if you are linking to them.

Other penalties are difficult to detect, leaving you with the option of trying different things and checking to see if they effect your SERPs. If you think you are doing something that is getting you a penalty, stop doing it, then check your SERPs. If they improve in a week or so, then you may have had a penalty. Definitely not an exact science.

Webber does have something useful that you could use. Google aside, I don’t think SE’s really penalize a website unless you do something as bad as cloaking, redirects and so on. You could get away with these too. So don’t worry about SE’s removing your site from their directory.

According to the software on the site I am not banned. But I just read somewhere that if you search for site:http://www.domain.com (ur url) and u only get one link up means ur banned. When I search for my url i dont get all of the pages just one! the main site, index

I’ve been looking at this issue very carefully over the last few weeks. From my understanding, if your site still appears in google’s search results, and your PR hasn’t dropped to 0, then your site has not been banned.

If your positions in the search engine results have dropped dramatically, then it is possible that your site has a penalty against it. There are all types of penalties that a site can get.. from a duplicate content penalty, hidden text penalty, etc. Penalties are not permanent. They can last up to 3 months or longer, assuming that you have fixed the problem causing it.

If you look up search terms such as (how long do google penalties last?) in google, you will get a few results. I found this thread about it: http://www.seoforumz.com/forums/article49.htm

If this is true, you are most likely not experiencing a full ban, however you may be experiencing some sort of filtering due to the algorithm changes Google has been making.

You should post your site here and we can give you suggestions on what to do, or what not to do. Then at least you are not guessing. I looked in your profile for the site, but found Nada!

I think more information is needed before you decide you have a penalty. How long has your site been listed on Google? For instance, if you just got a new site listed, you may not have gotten a deep search from their spider yet. Google and other SE’s spider your site differently at different times.

Another possiblity is if you have all of the same names in your title tag. If every page has the same name, SE’s will often only show the one page in it’s results thinking the others are duplicate.

And finally, you should really set up a Google sitemap. http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login This will make certain the Google knows about all of the pages on your site.

I agree, that’s why I asked to have the url posted for review or suggestions.

I also agree with your other points about Sitemaps and dup-titles throughout the entire site.

There are so many things that could be the “issue” it is best to have something to look at instead of just guessing about the possibilities.
