As many of you know, Australia introduced new laws, specifically The Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill of 2016. This law was pretty universally seen to be a big negative for online gambling and poker sites. Following its passage, tons of sites like PokerStars, 888, Party Gaming, MicroGaming and more promptly told their Australian customers to withdraw and that they were leaving Aussies behind.

Those were all publicly traded companies though. While it is true that other privately held companies left, some stayed. Notably Ignition Casino and Intertops. In fact, Intertops began aggressively marketing to Australians. They created new poker tournaments set squarely during the peak times of play in the AU. They juiced guarantees. They pushed more “down under” themed casino games and sporting events.

Thus, after only a few months, it was a surprise to see this in our inbox:

Sure enough, no new sign ups from Australia. The existing sign ups are being grandfathered in though. Thus, all those players that Tops picked up in this short promotional period are allowed to continue to play. Good news perhaps for those affiliates who pushed Intertops heavily as a replacement when everyone else bailed! Here is some more thorough analysis of the situation.
