We recently released an article that give an inside look on Player Poaching that’s gotten a bit of buzz in our social media circles.
You Can View the Article Here: How Player Poaching Works

I wanted to bring some conversation here to the forums… Anyone endured this before? What are your thoughts on this practice? Are there any preventative measures, or is it just “the nature of the beast” when it comes to online gambling?

While Poaching might be called competition by some, shaving sounds totaling like stealing to me.

I’ve never poached and would not even consider doing it, ever. Once you start down that road you never know where you’ll end up.

I don’t get how poaching works.

To make it simple I am going to call the player a fish, the perk = bait and the casinos = lakes…. here goes.

A big fish is swimming in Lake 123, a poacher comes along and throws out some bait to the big fish. Does the poacher try to get the fish to swim in a new lake or does he want the fish to continue swimming in LAKE 123? Because if it’s the same lake, doesn’t the management of lake 123 know that he/she already swims there? To me, that would not work, unless the poacher wants the big fish to swim in another lake that the poacher reccomends.

Me thinks poaching is when a fish (a bass etc., not a sucker) is minding his own business and a hungry fisherman comes along and offers him bigger juicier fatter bait.

But the unsportsman part is that the fish has already been caught by another fisherman and is in his net. This hungry fisherman swims under the other fishermans boat and cuts his net to let the fish out – then recatches the fish and calls it his own.

If this prize fish has already been tagged, the game warden (casino) might check to see who the fish really belongs to. But the warden might be off doing other stuff like drinking beer or chasing people fishing with dynamite.

    ….

And if you are an egg that has been poached you come out of your shell all slimy. If you are the person poaching the egg you better use a spoon to fish out the egg otherwise you might burn your fingers.

poaching is what happened to Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire.

I think a lot of poker rooms and probably casinos coddle poachers.

These are often their top earners.

Rakeback used to be a mud pie of poaching, not sure if that’s still the case.

Offering higher rakeback to a player and asking him to delete cookies so he would show as a new player was commom practice, not sure if it still is.

The programs looked the other way and allowed the increased rakeback because often the poached player came from a different network and was added to the room as new player. If this poacher, who brought players over from other properties, poached a few from within the network it was ignored since the poacher was such a “good” affiliate.

Eventually the poker room would paint itself into a corner since the rakeback ended up so massive after a good player had been poached x times, that there was little profit left.

So one by one the poker rooms released various rules regarding rakeback.

Make sure you read these rules carefully! They determine whether your players are safe or not.

Not that there aren’t still a lot of “under the table” deals.

I had my own affiliate program where I offered 1.25 per signup for my free bingo tournaments. There was an affiliate that managed to take credit for EVERY single player with a particular cgi.user_agent (which indicated the presence of a particular piece of spyware which comes with many common shareware programs) to the tune of well over 1000 signups / month. Many of those players showed regular Google searches as the http_referer and this is long before gambling was allowed on adwords. When I did a search on it, I only found a handful of others who had noticed the scam. I complained to the affiliate network and passed the information on to law enforcement but nothing came of it. I don’t think they could get their heads around it.

I really think i have been poached of a lot of players…..
I dont think I would do it to anyone else..

So how this works is say a poucher entises someone out of a game into an entirely new affiliate program ect Bobs affiliate network of poker black jack to, Adrians affiliate network of bingo??

If this is the case the casino themselves if they find this practice happening (because they want this player to stay on their program) hult or ban the ip of this poacher ect? Or even to a greater excent – have on their site if you are being poached to leave our great affiliate program please contact us with proof and we will match that bonus.

    this would stop poaching.

That’s a great point… I’m all for karma… However, I think blatant poaching is just wrong. But, what are your thoughts on being able to market to a wider base, and players naturally select working with you rather than others?

That’s a great point… and seems like an approach like this could work in order to prevent blatant poaching.

My question is… do Operators provide thorough enough tracking that could allow affiliates to legitimize these acts?

They don’t need tracking they only need the message proof – they could have a little side bar on all there games currenly in progress (In red) are you being poached – approached by players to join a different program?

If it is legit we will match it by 10 percent.

The proof is in the messaging and of course in there system i.p addresses ect. from the poachers and ip address.

Yes that should fix the poaching infact it would :)

and so the players dont play on the system (ect get someone they know to entise them)

to get extra points in the game they are already at , first poach is auto matic ( beat it by 10 percent)

2nd poach ( may seem fishy beat it by 5 percent)

3rd poach ( please provide details of the person who is wanting to poach you before you move and we will beat it by 20 percent)

In esseence the last attempt would be asking details for the poacher – which the affilate reverses it by going higher for asking for details of this poacher if they provide details of the poacher they get a massive 20 percent)

    Or something to this effect.

All the program would do is, the player who is getting entisted by the program (before they move to a different program and before the casino program they are on offers them one better)

Please provide details of the person who is poaching them ( as proof that they are actually getting prooof that they are being poached and not playing the system)

I’m sure the person poaching will simply give up wanting to give details.

There are plenty of ways to stop this infact i just had another idea ( so the person poaching doesn’t claim the signup)

allow the person to be free if he wants to use your program , plus another program thats fine ( but don’t give the poacher the credit)

You could do it the opposite way – get the player to tell you what program he is getting entised to create an (affiliate oposition refer back link ) that if they want to go to that program aswell thats fine ( get them to state the program they have been enticed to ( you the program create a link hardlink to the opposition that you are getting entised to. not the poachers link.)

and you let them go if they really want to but if they want to come back that hard link you provided to go back to they

    claim the bonus back.
