Does anyone use LinkedIn as a way to connect? It seems to be a good way to build an online resume and connect with job prospects, but is it any use for affiliates?

There is a CAP LinkedIn Group but I think we can make this much more if people actually use LinkedIn.

    Is it worth it?

I havn’t found a use of it for affiliates, but from what I understand it is becoming a widely used site for professionals job hunts. Maybe the members of CAP can put their heads together and find a good use for it for affiliates.

I have never found it to be of much use from an affiliate perspective. And quite honestly, I’m not sure of its true worth when it comes to job networking either. It has a nice hierarchical (or web-based) ability to link friends-of-friends, etc., but at the end of the day, I’m not entirely sure if the linking premise is helping anyone find employment. I may be wrong here, but I’ve never heard anyone tell me that the reason they secured employment was due to their LinkedIn contacts.

not particularly good for affiliates IMO, but I’ve been head-hunted in my professional SEO capacity so it’s a winner there for me personally

I know that I have had my profile checked when applying for a job. They took a look at recommendations and what not. Its a good way an employer to validate a resume. If someone said they worked for a company for x years and were a top employee, but they are not connected to anyone from that company and they have no recommendations for the work, it will raise suspicion.

I have also seen it useful for people looking to fill a specific role. They change their status to “Looking for an Affiliate Manager in Germany” or something and their network will see it. If any of them is or knows of an affiliate manager willing to live in Germany, they might just give a shout out.

As for affiliates, I’m still trying to figure this one out… I think it might be a good source of connecting to other affiliates you’ve partnered with or done business with to show trust. It might also be a good way to have aff managers recommend an affiliate so when that affiliate signs up for another program they have an easier time. But managers don’t want to loose their top employees, so…

I believe the benefits of using LinkedIn as an affiliate are the following:

    1. Recommendations — The recommendations on LinkedIn do truly carry weight. If you have a handful or more of great recommendations from affiliate managers, marketing directors, etc. and show this to new programs you are looking to negotiate deals with, it definitely helps.

    2. Issue Escalation — Sometimes no matter how many times you e-mail an affiliate manager or PM them here at CAP, you don’t get a response. People move around in this industry quite a bit and sometimes our requests fall on deaf ears because the person is simply no longer there. I’ve found LinkedIn helpful by looking up the company or program name I’m trying to reach and finding a member of their senior management there. On numerous occasions, a quick response was received through LinkedIn and the issue was resolved.

    Hope this helps.

I know for a fact LinkedIn pages carry a lot of weight in Google. This is another benefit – by setting up a complete LinkedIn profile and then linking to your domain name via the “My Website” area – you are receiving a pretty powerful link IMHO for free. Make sure your profile is set to “visible to all” in order for this to work. I tested this out with some of my personal sites and it does help.
