“six Rules of the banners” from HumanSapiens:

    1. a banner MUST NOT redirect viewers to a web page without allowing them to choose to do so, The banner should present a ‘click’ button that only by pressing will redirect the viewer to the destination web page.

    2. banner MUST NOT annoy the viewers visually, this includes: disturbing messages with disturbing colors, viewers nowadays refuse to cooperate with banners that annoy them visually and this can lead to a bad taste in the eyes of them that associates with the company and products that the banner is marketing.

    3. a banner MUST NOT annoy the viewers audibly, this includes: sounds that occur when user hovers with the mouse on the banner. (same reason as rule #2)

    4. a banner MUST NOT consume high resources from the viewer’s computer and browser, this includes high CPU usage, networking and others. banners that do this will create bad taste in the eyes of the viewers and as well in the eyes of the owners of the sites that advertise the banners. This may lead to 2 bad things: 1. raise of advertisement price for the banners. 2. Decision of the site owners to take off the banners. The viewer that was exposed to your banner did not come to the web page to see the banner, he came to see the content of the page, the banner should not “devalue” this page but only contribute to it.

    5. a banner MUST NOT mislead the viewers using text messages that don’t have a full coverage behind them. doing so will upset the viewers. When they eventually understand the “catch” they will probably close the web page of the advertised product and never cooperate with banners that market this company again since they will associate it with a scam.

    6. a banner MUST NOT present pop-up windows or other things that expand beyond the initial size of the banner, this includes banners that expand when users hover the mouse on them. our experience show very clearly that this technique annoys users, people that interact with banners like these will mostly not purchase the products even if they are impressed by the banner, and this is not what banners are for, The banners is there to advertise a product and not advertise itself.
