Research I read said that the most effective time for open rates is when people are online of course, so they get your mail when they are at their PC, rather than within a load of other emails when they log on.
There is software out there which allows you to monitor views and see when individual customers open the mails from you. BUT research has shown that it pretty much ties in with when they registered.
So if you dont have the technology to know the time that your emails are opened, one trick is to match when you send a mail to a customer with when they registered (presuming you record the time, day they register). ie. If someone joins your site on a Saturday morning, then makes sense that they may spend Saturday mornings at their PC.
If you dont have the ability to be quite so clever, then sure you have to just test what works best for you. Some other research I read showed that the highest online usage in the uk is Thursday early evening. Many people stay late at work on a Thursday in the UK to try and get work done so they can leave early on a Friday. Makes sense to me, I always used to do that back when I had a normal job!!
So the best chance of catching someone online at their PC in UK is Thursday around 5-6 ish - even though they maybe staying to do work, a decent email could easily interupt that and be opened at least. But some may not be able to access online gambling sites from work of course, and may not have the time at work to open an account, so more clever research would need to be done if you want to measure sign ups rather than just open rates. -
