New acquisition opens door for gaming software company to offer sports betting
March 30, 2009 (CAP Newswire) — Software developer Playtech has been riding high recently, with a variety of high-profile announcements that have kept the ten-year-old online and mobile software developer in the iGaming headlines. These announcements have ranged from a lucrative licensing agreement with Marvel Entertainment to a new website redesign, plus very strong financial results released last week, which described a huge profit increase.
But the latest and perhaps most exciting piece of news is the report that Playtech has purchased Cyprus-based sportsbetting software provider Player2Player (for an undisclosed sum of money). This will enable the Isle of Man-based Playtech to enter the sportsbetting market.
“The addition of sportsbetting brings important growth opportunities for the company in regulated jurisdictions, creating new cross-selling opportunities, enabling licensees to diversify their businesses and helping the company to attract new customers,” Mor Weizer, Chief Executive Officer for Playtech, told iGaming Business Magazine.
Also according to iGaming Business Magazine, Playtech will integrate Player2Player’s technology into its existing gaming platforms and make it available “soon”. Combined with Playtech’s existing software capabilities in the casino, bingo, and poker markets, the addition of sports betting means that the company will now offer all major forms of online gambling.
This news could well shaking things up in the Australian and Asia Pacific region.
Playtech is ultra impressive. With there positive momentum , great technology and top notch customer service I see them taking a chunk out of the Australian market at Centrebet and AIS’s expense. In Australia the igaming and online casino operators also need to be mindful of the ACMA ‘blacklist’. Betfair was rumoured to have made the list and there’s whispers of Centrebet making the list, but no one will confirm as the list is basically impossible to get hold of. Australia’s Freedom of Information laws are not even helping us hard working journalists and media agents.
Australia’s James Packer and Virgin’s Richard Branson were spotted chatting and talking shop in Melbourne a few days ago. My gut tells me something huge is in the wind for the Australian and Asia Pacific sector. We’re done some light business with Crown and also a number of arms of Virgin, so i will release what I can in the near future. I expect William Hill to also be in on the action. Neither Centrebet nor IAS are on the list.
Betfair, however, is on the list.I’m gonna have to disagree with you there as well Greg about Playtech taking the Australian market on over CB and IAS’s expense.. Since sportsbetting is legal here in Australia, and these two companies are pretty well known, I don’t think it will impact them too much. That’s my personal opinion.
I have to agree with Renee here. It will take a lot from a new outfit to start competing with the Aussie licensed sports books here in Australia.
Especially since the format of the product does not seem to be that of the normal bookmaker variety, but rather a “new” player to player concept (which I would assume is a betting exchange without actually saying “betting exchange”).
From what I can tell since the arrival of another exchange here in Aus, is that the punters here can’t be f*cked (to use one of my favorite Aussie terms:)) to learn how to use it. Hell, it’s hard enough getting punters out of the TAB and betting online, never mind teaching them a new system. A bloke who works with me, at an online sports book STILL PLACES HIS BETS AT THE TAB, despite the various benefits (which he is fully aware of) of online betting.
I also don’t think the Asia Pacific region is the primary target on Playtech’s mind here.
Nothing personal Greg. I don’t mean to seem like I’m attacking your views here mate, and you may well be right. Just a few observations from my experience in the Aus market.

I think you hit the nail on the head there…
I think Playtech would probably target Europe before us. I mean we have footy etc, but there are other bigger sports around the world with bigger punters like the soccer (football) in Europe, especially with the next world cup coming up next year in SA.It also looks as though the “asia pacific” region is more interested in poker than anything else, especially the “asia” part :tongue:
A lot of Aussies still have no idea that you can play online. I was in my Italian class the other day and we were learning how to say what we do and when i told the teacher what I did, her reaction was “What? You can play casino games online?” She just couldn’t believe it was possible, and she’s not that old either, maybe in her 40s..
I think the way most media outlets portray online casino means that a lot of Aussies stear clear of it because they don’t know the legalities.
To add to Schalks part about his mate who still goes into the TAB – our guys also still go into the TAB. We don’t run a sportsbook, but they all know about them and still choose to go into the TAB. I think it’s also because it’s traditional to hang out at a pub with a TAB or similar. Aussie punters would rather be on the piss at the pub with their mates betting than in their house – it’s how we roll (Aussie’s I mean) :tongue:
It will be interesting to see if any of us Aussies down under get a call or email from the ACMA. I’ve been vocal about the Australian government trying to tell us what is good for us, what’s not, what to think, see, hear, read, watch, wipe our *ss with etc. SBS Insight last night was interesting. It’s still up on the net! Mr Conroy dodged a few bullets, but I think the Australian people are smarter than what this government may believe. Liberal may just win the next election on the “blacklist” topic alone. If we loose freedom of speech, freedom of thought et al, we’ve lost just about everything. The coming weeks and months will be interesting and the censorship and blacklist matter are not doing to go away in a hurry. I was delighted to help push it along towards international news despite some efforts of Australian polies to try to keep it hush at first… they soon gave up. The online , freedom of speech and FOI wars have just only started. I’m glad to be a member of the Australian media union (MEAA) at this time. Don’t forget to see the movie “They Live”.
