OK. Do me a favor and post the top 3-5 reasons you want to vote for a particular candidate, please do not add in comments that are jabs or bs. Please just post the reasons you want to vote for your candidate and do not post any why you do NOT want to vote for one.

Can we do a civilized thread here?

    1. Taxes – Lower corporate taxation will be the #1 way to reduce consumer goods pricing and increase jobs. Remember corporations to not pay taxes, they consider it a cost and include this in their pricing of goods. This will be a huge savings to a family over the course of a year in spending.

    2. Taxes II – Increasing the taxes on people who earn more money deters peoples ambitions to do so. I am for a low flat tax but we will not see that until the people of this country wake up some day.

    3. Welfare – This is the root of all that is wrong with this country. Paying people to do nothing is absolutely the wrong message to send. All people that can not work to no fault of their own should be cared for but that’s is it.

    4. Size of government – We have grown incredibly out of control with the size of government and spending. Spending must stop. Programs must be stopped that do not follow the mail role of government.

    5. Security – The leader of the free (somewhat) nation must be one that is strong and will back up out allies and defence when required.

Side question – What is the role of government? (if your answer is more than 1 sentence long, you, like 98% of congress got the wrong answer)

I will not vote for McCain because according to HIS record, he voted against issues that are of interest to me like:

    equal pay for equal work
    reproductive choice
    vet benefits
    insurance for children
    tax cuts for the wealthy
    to old
    ran a dirty campaign

I’ve listened to them both and IMO Obama’s view on social and economic issues are more inline with my beliefs and I fee that he can relate to the World better than McPalin.

Even though I did not follow your rules I hope that wasn’t to bias, ‘mean spirited’ or to offensive for ya. :)

I don’t think your question is fair.

I simply am sick of the republican agenda/propeganda.

Anything looks better than what has taken us so far down in so little time.

if that’s a jab, then be it. but it is the truth to the answer of your question.

If I was american these would be my reasons:

    1. Environment/wildlife – Republicans are horrible with this, democrats have a history of trying to conserve whats there. Sarah Palin especially scares me as shes voted to keep polar bears off the Endangered Species List. She also refuses to give any type of protection to the local whale population. I didn’t do much looking into her so there might be much more.

    2. Health care – Call me socialist if you will, but I don’t think anyone should forgo surgery because they cant afford it. I think as it is the American system is broken and very over priced for its users. I have heard all the arguments about how Canadians flock to the states for better treatment. For the most part these are isolated cases. Its not just us who think the US system is broken ask anyone from almost anywhere that is not a third world country. Europeans, Australians, etc all agree with me on this. Also guess what Americans pay almost the same level of Federal tax as Canadians, so how come you don’t have coverage?

    3. Pro military. I don’t think its cool to build weapons for the sole purpose of lining the pockets of Halliburton and similar companies. The USA doesn’t need more military spending. But this to me goes back to the health care issue, if you reduced spending then you could offer free health care but of course no democrat or republican would ever suggest that since they would lose the popular vote. But I think democrats are a little bit less war hungry.

I am not going to make up 5 reasons as those are basically it. So I would vote democrat because their values are closer to mine than the opposing party.

    I vote democratic because:
    1. Personal freedom, civil rights – i think the republicans are about limiting rights and the democrats are about protecting those who are abused by society.

    2. Taxation and Spending – democrats believe that those who get the most from society should pay the most. democrats believe that you solve societies problems by the government addressing them, so they support schools, research, feeding poor people and having government do it. Republicans seem to think charity is better than government.

    3. Fiscal Responsibility – the only balanced/surplus budgets in my life came under Bill Clinton, about 90% of the US government debt ( for 240+ years) was run up under the presidencies of Reagan, Bush, Bush.

    4. Foreign Policy – democrats don’t piss on our allies and treat our allies like junior partners, i speak specifically about how GWB treated Tony Blair. Much more willing to talk first, shoot later

    5. Right To privacy – Democrats support a right choose abortion, the right for people to couple with another adult regardless of gender and in general democratic presidents don’t respond to Supreme Court decisions by announcing they’re not obligated to follow the ruling.

    6. Throughout my life republicans have been about trying to blame “Liberals” for everyone’s proplems, promise a tax cut will solve all problems and generally have tried to divide the country, while spewing hate, first it was against “The Liberal Media” then “affirmative action” and the last 8 years “The Cultural and Intellectual elite. Democrats talk about bringing people together, pulling up those on the bottom, building our national assets.

    7. Environment – Democratic politicians don’t change scientific reports to match politcal beliefs. The democrats believe in fighting global warming, allowing people to know whether they’re buying Genetically Modified food or hormone/antibiotic feed animals.

In general i find republicans think the best way to help business is thru tax cuts, reduced regulations and a cheap labor force. Democrats think that paying people a living wage is an employer’s obligation and providing an educated, valuable workforce and the economic/educational infrastructure is the job of government/schools/universities.

I think the government’s job is to facilitate economic activity and that involve regulations of finance, food, medication, education and the environment. It involves providing infrastructure and creating/providing a skilled, reliable workforce.

    BTW Chips,
I support simplifying taxes so that Corps would pay no taxes on income distributed to shareholders, further i would eliminate the employer’s SS/Medicare tax share, and do a canadian like health care system. The idea is to give business cheap, easy way to hire people, eliminate full/part time issue adn the idea of employers paying benefits, supplementing taxes, etc.(i think that gets similar benefit that you seek with low taxes) All taxes should be on income or “Sin”/sales taxes on non-food medicine.

Business needs low friction, low tax, conditions with a flexible work force. If we want people to be able to work “flexibly”, we need to help support them in between engagements. Socialism must be run like a business, if it has any chance to succeed. A lot of european countries have come pretty close to a decent compromise, but seem to lack the labor flexibilty that the US and Canada have.

I am going to make a completely non-party comment, not exactly what was asked here, but these are things I want to see:

    1. Fix the national debt. Stop spending money like it grew on trees. As long as we are in such deep debt we are NOT any kind of power, we are growing to be other nation’s pet because we have to toe the financial line or give back in other ways. Additionally, the economy will suck until we get out of debt. Doesn’t anyone see that? There is no free lunch!

    2. Return freedoms to people. Stop micromanaging people’s lives. This goes from getting rid of recently granted excessive powers to government to regulating reproduction, having banks tell us what we can do with our own money (particuarly worrysome) and small things like whether or not you can plant flowers in your front yard or have to have a lawn. The US is supposed to be the land of the free – let’s bring that back. It’s gone.

    3. Rebuild our own country and not others. New Orleans still isn’t fixed. People are on welfare by the droves. Sick people can’t get medication or treatment. How can you have a strong nation when so many of it’s members are weak? Don’t give money away, create jobs and with these fix our own ills! Yes, I think even government needs to spend money to create more money. Working people create jobs by spending money, and they pay back to the government with taxes. When did we forget that simple principle? Put unemployed people to work fixing our own problems. People need a reason to be proud of themselves and their country – that creates strength!

    4. Create a strong military that takes care of it’s own like it used to. Where have all the military hospitals gone? Where are the vet benefits? Why didn’t the military have a hand in rebuilding New Orleans? Again, you cannot be a strong country without a strong population. Look at history over the centuries.

And lastly, I am really sick of the mud slinging in elections. It’s disgusting and detracts the everyday Joe from the real issues. It creates elections where the people who vote base their decision on who can sling more mud. Nuts.

Excellent points Dom. The one thing that we all must remember is that after this election we all have to live together so running a campaign to divide pro-america from anti-america is not a good thing to do. :)
