I've found that local search terms, being in a small island are my most successful. This doesn't apply to many though.

I generally get more signups from people searching for "odds" than "tips". More traffic from those searching for tips, especially on certain sporting and racing events.

Things like "free bets" and "horse racing tips" are way too general for me. I won't go into details, but in a previous life, I used to rank #1 for the #1 term in an industry. It certainly made me a lot of money at the time, but ranking #1 for 1,000,000 smaller longer tail phrases would make more money and with a lot less effort in a) gaining that position and b) retaining that position.

Being in that place, number 1 for a single word in a highly competitive market as a smaller operation without a huge IT support network also puts you at great risk of competitors doing all kinds of things, many not legal, to knock you off the mantle. I think I've seen it all, DDOS, fake email spam, fake (insert anything here) reports, plain anti-SEO tactics, spam complaints with no merit, they'll even go to the effort of giving you obviously shady backlinks, then reporting them to the search engines. It's tough being at the top when you're not a large company.

Long tail is where it's at for me.

My best words are much longer tailed and very event specific. They only catch for around 24 hours prior to the match - but you can be sure that the punter is interested in that specific event.
Hm..I though that if your long tailed KW includes for example Online bets, so with the help of backlinks you can promote both, no?
