I work for an online marketing firm and a sales rep from Gator (now Claria), just told me that Gator is no longer accepting gambling ads from online casinos and online gambling. I do some online gambling affiliate programs as a side business, so I know the fight among scumware and affiliates.
Gator is getting the same pressure that Google and Yahoo have been receiving. It seems that WhenU and other scumware companies will fall to the same pressure, but no official word yet. I’ll see what I can dig up.
I have not been able to find any official statement or article about this. So you heard it here first at CAP!

May 17, 2004 at 7:23 pm #649365vladcizsolMemberYeah I heard this last month but had agreed to sit on it. Some of the larger affiliates are quite upset about it, but frankly I never used scumware and hope those that did crash and burn.
May 17, 2004 at 8:22 pm #649367AnonymousInactiveWell, they didn’t tell me to sit on it… so now it’s out.
May 17, 2004 at 9:12 pm #649368vladcizsolMemberThanks for the heads up…
May 18, 2004 at 3:23 pm #649420AnonymousInactiveI am going to be especially happy.
It will be the end of Gamesandcasino being targeted by fellow affiliates.
It is plain theft – and I am very much looking forward to have it stop.
A year ago I was blaming the casinos for all of it – but Gator stopped popping on top of affiliate sites. Most casinos excempted affiliates from being targets.
Oddly more spyware companies kept showing up and stealing from me….with affiliate codes!
It is sad that some people have no scruples.
May 18, 2004 at 4:58 pm #649423AnonymousInactiveJune 1st is the cutoff date for Gator.
May 18, 2004 at 6:21 pm #649426AnonymousInactiveGOOD RIDDANCE!
However, Gator has not been a major player or problem for a while now. I’m a bit more worried about crap like whenu, and stuff which overwrites your aff codes when someone clicks on your links. All Gator ever did is pop up an ad when it detected certain keywords or sites. The user still had a choice not to click… but with some other scumware the user clicks on your links but you may not be getting credit…
May 18, 2004 at 6:24 pm #649427AnonymousInactiveYes. like the “URL thief” matter we had about a year ago.
These things are thriving, and I think with the disappearance of legit advertising venues we will see even more of it.
May 18, 2004 at 9:17 pm #649437AnonymousInactiveI spoke with a WhenU rep, they have no plans to cancel gambling ads at this time (as far as the rep knows).
May 19, 2004 at 4:01 am #649439AnonymousInactiveWhile I wont shed any tears for Gator, and it’ll be nice to see them losing money… this is a clear indication that the campaign the us is waging against advertising companies is continuing onwards. They’ve so far targetted television ads, PPC giants, and now scumware. Who is next on the list?
May 19, 2004 at 6:27 am #649450AnonymousInactiveGoogle and Gator (also known as Claria) have both filed to go public in the last couple of months. In the case of Claria, I bet that their decision to discontinue gambling ads has more to do with their wanting to be “clean” in possible shareholders eyes than appeasing the government. Any hint of trouble with the government and that is one less shareholder that may buy their publicly offered stock and line their pockets.
The same goes for Google; I find it interesting that they pulled their gambling ads right around the time they filed for an IPO and released their financial records.
May 19, 2004 at 12:08 pm #649458AnonymousInactiveI never used Gator and I am glad to see them go. My sites have been a tarket and after June 1st I look forward to a increase in revenue.
May 19, 2004 at 9:50 pm #649489AnonymousInactiveWho is next on the list?

May 20, 2004 at 11:27 pm #649575AnonymousInactiveThis is a good news, and also.. Gator mess up our browser..
