Well, while looking to see if a recent press lease was indexed i found a site that completely copied it apart from a key word here and a keyword their.

i think i have seen this guy on cap at some point.
    here are a few examples…

    real release

if you have made any press releases you will find it here http://www.ixgames.com/newsfeeds/view/gambling/ or here http://blog.ixgames.com/

they are not even rewrites, just straight copies with a few linked keywords.

now im right in thinking what this person is doing is wrong, or am i going crazy.
I pay good money for press release to be written, so im not best please to see my article copied and just changed my details in links for his own.
I know press releases and are distributed on other sites, but not like this ?

It’s a blog. Blogs are infamous for reusing content – and rewording just a few things. You do see it an awful lot. Is it wrong? Probably. But it happens a lot.

I’ve seen and heard discussions from newspapers and other reporting sites (who generate most of the original content) complaining too.

Fro me the issue occurs when an item is newsworthy – as I don’t think that you can’t TM or copyright news.

EG. I could probably rip the first article off with something like …

Professional poker champion Chris “Jesus” Ferguson is among the list of top-class card players invited to Council Bluffs for the state’s first-ever World Series of Poker qualifying tournament at Harrah’s Horseshoe Casino.

There will be a prize pool of more than $1 million will be on the table Jan. 29 through Feb. 7. The winner gets a ring, and a seat at a “big table” in Las Vegas for the 2007 World Series of Poker, which will draw upwards of 10,000 players and a pot worth more than $12 million.

I’ve only changed a few words (in bold) but I don’t see how you could reasonably claim a copyright on these raw facts.
    :eh:

    Other opinions please ??

Are you talking about press releases?

They are MEANT to be copied. You make a press release to spread the word about something. You WANT as many places as possible to use it, or to base an article on it.

News articles are usually copyrighted and you can “announce ” them, i.e. show your readers a part and LINK to the original. Thats what most blogs, message boards and sites will do. Or you can write your own story about the topic.

“Free articles” usually come with an embedded link you must use. They are the current fad for gaining links, and they are written with the intent of having as many sites as possible use them, keeping the link intact.

Articles individuals or companies write exclusively for their site are copyrighted and you cannot copy them, you can announce them and link to them as the news articles. This is a treacherous territory though and often it is wise to not copy any of it and just mention it and link to it.

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. Online copyright is a bit tricky and there are lawyers specializing in it. You are probably ok following the rule of thumb above, but you should consult an online copyright lawyer if you plan to use any materials written by others or if you discover someone used your writings.

I have been sued over this (not in this industry) and I also have sued someone over it. If you always respect people’s rights to their own work, you will be ok. If you take what others wrote, even with small alterations, and publish it as your own content without permission or links, it’s plagiarism and the laws do have a thing to say about that.

Again, this can be a slippery slope and if in doubt, ask a lawyer.

Oh yes the blog, I do not use them. Anyway I am curious as to what, why and who did this. Currently I am not in a position to find out. I sure hope it is not the CAP member I am thinking about.

If the situation is not corrected by the New Year I will begin the digging process.

    Hi – Thanks for replys

yes its a blog, but thats just a subdomain of http://ixgames.com

Yeah i understand the news and free articles can be duplicated, but in my case it was a press release about My website – he just copied it word for word and changed my name to his, changed my links to his and then just added a few other links in the release.

below is one thats not an article or news release – its content

real article – with page protected by copyscape

yer, i mean im not that bothered about my press release being used like this, although its annoying – as it wont get me any dupe content penalty as i dont put the press release on my site..

but i see other CAP webmasters press release’s copied, in his blog with just the sitename changed and a few added links.

however ive also seen much copied content like the example in my last post that should no way be copied

ixgames just curious did you use a automated program to retrieve the content? I hope I am not half asleep on this one but I must thank you. Takes some courage to step forward and correct the situation. I deeply respect your response.

    Hello

The reason we are coming forward, is just that, we are serious…

Im one of the key figures and coordinators of ixgames.com, and we are a very serious business with several people involved, writters, designers, programmers etc

Some of these “jobs” has been outsourced, and i will check over things much better in the future

Regarding the press releases (kinda like Dom said press releases are meant to be seen by as much people as possible).

To answer the question regarding an automated program. It’s very hard if not impossible to run a good business with automated programs. We don’t use them and won’t do in the future either

I will now look over the press releases and our part of blog.ixgames.com. I will deal with this today!!

Darko, you are welcome to PM me with any further questions you may have

We are not thieves, but strong competitors.

    I will keep you posted

    What have happened so far

We have totally rewritten this article here

    http://blog.ixgames.com/?p=190

What I can say about the press releases, we have done one thing wrong here.

The problem from our side, is that we have not rewritten the press releases enough. It’s like the gooner says in his post that; “I could probably rip the first article off with something like” and yes he could, and it would be ok.

Further more, ixgames blog is just like any other blog and we intend to keep it that way

The outsource company that took care of those press releases / rewrittes are no longer working for us. But as I said we are working together with other sources as well. Im gonna see to this alot harder in the future.

so it would be ok to change a word or 2 ?

so you wouldnt mind me now outsourcing a job to one of my many content writers to go to your site and i will tell them to copy and paste every single article and review you have and i will tell them please skim through and change 2 words per article.

i think they could do 100 articles for me in 1 hour (just changing 2 words)…..hmmmm cheap content for sure….maybe $15

So in your words “it would be ok”
