Opponents of Online Gambling Bill Rallying Against Leach and Frist in Iowa Tomorrow
written August 30, 2006
It's going to be a very interesting day in Iowa tomorrow for those who enjoy online gambling.
Offshore Gambling Myths and Facts, www.onlinegamblingmythsandfacts.com has published two flyers for Iowans interested in the issue of online gambling, which is the subject of a field hearing to be held tomorrow, August 31st, at 1:30 p.m. in Cedar Rapids before Iowa Congressman Jim Leach and Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist.
The first flyer provides OGMF’s commentary opposed to Rep. Leach’s proposed online gambling bill pending in Congress. The commentary highlights ten rationales to oppose Rep.Leach’s bill, including that the bill interferes with personal freedom, it will not work, it will drive online gambling revenues offshore, it will not protect minors or prevent money laundering, and it will violate United States international trade obligations and a WTO ruling.
The second flyer provides facts about American support for online gambling and opposition to Rep. Leach’s proposed ban. OGMF has compiled polling information and leading newspaper editorials that establish the overwhelming majority of Americans are opposed to Rep. Leach’s heavy-handed legislative approach. There are a number of leading newspapers and publications, for instance, that have written editorials opposing Rep. Leach’s bill, including the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Miami Herald, San Diego Union Tribune, San Antonio Express News, Arizona Star, and even Sports Illustrated.
A copy of the two flyers, which will be available to those who attend the field hearing, is attached to this press release.
In addition to polling information and editorials, OGMF notes that prominent business organizations such as the Independent Community Bankers of America, whose members range from New York's Metropolitan National Bank to Colorado's First National Bank of Las Animas, is objecting to Rep. Leach’s effort to introduce legislation that would block payments between U.S. residents and online casinos. The ICBA, as well as the American Bankers Associations, fears enforcement of this unruly bill would be burdensome – if not impossible – given the way banking transactions are processed. OGMF anticipates that online gamblers, despite lacking advance notice of the event, will attempt to converge at the field hearing tomorrow to offer their opinions and comments to Rep. Leach and Senator Frist.
