I am currently in Vegas and doing a podcast on the Internet Gambling Bill. I am an Aussie and a similar bill was passed in 2001 making all online play, including poker, totally illegal in Australia. Few Australian citizens are even aware of it’s existence or aware they are breaking the law by playing online. This Bill was passed through with no protest and relied on public ignorance and general disinterest.

US legislators have been looking closely at this bill. There is a piece that defined gambling and this says any game of chance or a game that is chance or a mix of chance and skill is gambling. Nail in the coffin for any online poker player.

I talked to Joe Hachem, last years WSOP main event winner and a fellow Australian. He was not aware of the existence of the Australian Internet Gambling Bill. He visibly paled when I explained the implications.

US legislators have looked closely at our bill and are using the same techniques. Players are scared and poker pros are scared. People that like to play 20 bucks on slots are scared.

Many have refused to comment for this podcast for fear of legal repurcussion, those that have been prepared to comment so far include Annie Duke, Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker.

I expect to have this podcast finished by the end of the week and offer it for free content for any webmaster. It is an important issue and I will happily brand it for your site if you require. It is by itself unbranded and will post a link here when it is finished.

I also have a sound byte coming from the PokerPlayersAlliance.com and a couple of other industry figures.

Don’t leave it to late to stand up and fight.

I keep forgetting that there is a lot of confusion about podcasts and should explain:

A podcast is a prerecorded audio or video piece.

You DON”T need an ipod to listen to it or view, it can be played online or saved to your drive and will play in almost any media player.

RSS feeds now allow people to subscribe to these shows using software such as iTunes from apple, most of these aggregators are free.

I started a poker podcast site a few months ago and it is the fastest growing site I have ever built. I am in the top 5% of all podcasts for subscribers with a relatively huge audience for this medium. Some say it is my sexy Aussie accent…as mentioned in Deal magazine in a piece on poker podcasts, but I like to think there is some substance as well ;)

This is the perfect medium for issues such as the gambling bill and gaining the ear of people who are probably unaware of the issue.
