The broker said it it is too early to say if this is part of a broader strategy on the prevention of Internet gambling in the US or if it is the Department of Justice ‘flexing its muscle and trying to influence legislation’.
At the moment, legislators are debating the combined Goodlatte/Leach Bill, which if passed into law, would prohibit gambling over the Internet.

News Alert: Carruthers ‘due in court this afternoon
Chief executive of BetonSports David Carruthers will be appearing in court at the Federal Court House in Fort Worth, Texas, at 2pm US Central time according to a spokesperson at the FBI.
Carruthers was detained late on Sunday afternoon at Dallas airport by the US authorities while en route from the UK to Costa Rica.
He was detained by members of the FBI and the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) at around 4pm local time with a warrant for his arrest. He is believed to have spent a night in Tarrant county jail.
According to sources, Carruthers will be charged under the federal racketeering statutes or RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act).
The Federal warrant has been issued out of state with a sealed indictment. The hearing will determine his rights and the possible bail conditions. Sources indicate he is unlikely to be granted bail. The hearing will also determine which Federal Correctional Institute he will be sent to.
His wife Carol Carruthers was travelling with him but was released immediately. He would have spent a night in the local county jail.

I am sure David was prepared for this, he has been very public in the US, promoting betonsports and must have been anticipating an event such as this.

It seems clear to me that anyone can be arrested in the good old usa with junk charges thrown in later.
Yep, that’s pretty much how they are doing it these days. Shoot first and ask questions later.
Heck just look at all those so called enemy combatives over in Gitmo; held without being charged for anything. If they want to arrest you they dont need a reason any longer; hell they will just blame it on terrorist and throw away the key.
My opinion, which won’t be popular around here, is that Carruthers and Ayre Are doing all of us a disservice. There’s no gray area about sportsbetting over the Internet in the US. It’s illegal, and always has been because of the Federal Wire Act. Wishing it wasn’t isn’t a viable strategy.
Now, if an online casino without a sportsbetting operation were similarly in the spotlight, I’d feel a lot better about it. Instead, we’ll likely see this all blow up in the spotlight, and you can rest assured that the media covering the high-profile trouble of Carruthers won’t make a distinction between sports betting and casino-style betting.

Definitely a very interesting development to keep an eye on. Calvin Ayre is a Canadian citizen BTW, not that the US wouldn’t go after him, but it would be a harder road to travel for the DOJ.
